So, I've thought for some time about wanting to do something like a Scripture of the Week, or two weeks or month on here or something. I want to try to attempt to share thoughts of things that are important to me or meaningful to me. Maybe someone else will stumble upon something that will help them someday. Today, I just really felt the need to just start doing it instead of sitting around with many good intentions that are not acted upon. Having good thoughts is great, but good thoughts without action mean nothing. So with that being said here is my first Scripture for Thought.
3 Nephi 5:13: "Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life."
A fitting scripture since this is my attempt at sharing thoughts and feelings about things of a religious nature. I think I was in college when this scripture really stood out to me. One of my Sunday School teachers pointed out that we are all disciples of Christ. It does not matter if we have an official mission call or if we are a teacher or have non-member friends. We are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and when we chose to join the church (whether at 8 years old or later) we said we would take upon us the name of Christ. We renew that covenant every time we take the sacrament. By doing that, we agree to stand up for what He stands for. We have the responsibility as members of the church to share the gospel with those around us.
That being said, it is not always as easy as we'd like it to be. I am a pretty shy person. Talking to people I may not know so well, especially about things that could get controversial to some people, can be hard for me, even if I believe very strongly about something. So what can I do to share the gospel? Well, I can live it. I can let my actions and choices be in line with the teachings of our Savior and the prophets. At work, one of the simplest ways to describe my job is to lead by example. I may not be allowed to share my testimony with the girls, but there have been times when girls have asked a few questions. And while I may not be able to share scriptures or phrase things in ways that may sound like a testimony to those around us, I can teach what I know to be right in terms of being a good person. And maybe someday, one of the girls I have worked with, or someone I do not know, will see my actions and wonder why it is I do what I do. Then they will come to find the gospel and have that joy in their lives as well.
So I guess my challenge to myself, and anyone else who cares to join me, is to do something each day to share and be a witness of Jesus Christ. I will try to make sure my actions are in line with his teachings so that no one who sees me will doubt what I believe when I tell them. I hope that all of us as members of the church can find ways to overcome fears and doubts to have faith to share the Light of Christ with those around us.
